Philippe The Original

A little Los Angeles history for you...

Philippe's, known as the birthplace of French Dip sandwiches, has been around for over 100 years in Los Angeles now. The menu is fairly simple. Sandwich selection: your choice of a beef, lamb, pork, ham, or turkey sandwich, a cheese topping, and how many times you want it dipped in their special Au Jus. Go with the double dip and add their special hot mustard! Sides: potato salad, cole slaw, pickled eggs... Drinks: they basically have all the sodas and beers, but the more notable drinks are probably the $0.70 lemonade and $0.09 coffee. Desserts: wide selection of homemade pies. They also serve breakfast from 6am til 10:30am.

Pickled Egg
Beef Sandwich with Swiss Cheese, double-dipped
Potato Salad
Pork Sandwich, single dipped
Expect long lines, but they move fairly quickly...

  1. A long time Los Angeles institution, Philippe's features the french dip sandwiches. The reason why they are called French dip sandwiches is not because of a french roll, that they use. They French, because Philippe was French. The dip sandwiches was actually a mistake that they did when they first opened. After the mistake, everyone kept asking for the dipped sandwiches.

They feature Beef, Pork, Ham, Lamb, and Turkey with different types of cheeses. The meats are thinly sliced with the bread dipped in the juices (the GOODNESS). You can see the Beef and Turkey sandwiches on the photos below. Their sandwiches are less than 6 bucks. . . so its cheap and good!

When you get the Philippe's there's two large parking lots, with one of them across the street. Make sure you have one in your party stand in line to get the orders, and another to secure seating. Philippe's is great, right before going to Dodger Games.

One of these days, I am going to try their breakfast.

  2. Don't forget, Philippe's claim that they created the French Dip sandwich is disputed. Cole's (in the Pacific Electric Building at 6th & Main) says they created the French Dip sandwich four years earlier. As a former Pacific Electric resident, I'm inclined to believe the latter. :-)

  3. Next time, try a bowl of their chili. Just went there today and had a cup of chili with my pork sandwich. Unbelievable...
